Roehampton’s incoming welterweight, Jamie Carley, makes his professional debut at the Tolworth Leisure Centre this Saturday night looking to make up for a little lost time.
A brief amateur career followed Carley primarily making appearances for charity, until he met Keith Hawkins that is – seeds were sown and the now 29-year-old fighter ended up at Small Holdings before deciding earlier this year that it was time to make a go of it, and make a push for a Southern Area title sooner rather than later.
“I’m at an age now where I either box just for fun, or make a good go of it,” began Carley.
“It’s more structured in the pros and there’s good time for training, sparring and what-have-you and being with Adam Martin, we just clicked from the off. The age I’m at now though I’d be happy boxing for a Southern Area sooner than later and what comes after that, happens – I’ve got a chance like anyone else though.”
In opposing experienced Devon fighter, Ali Wyatt, the southern debutant has had some top quality sparring with Penge’s British, Inter-continental and European welterweight star, Bradley ‘Super’ Skeete ahead of his title defence against Alexandre Lepelly the same night (at the Ice Arena, Cardiff).
“There’s been plenty of notice for my debut and I’ve had a really good camp building up to Saturday night,” Carley added.
“The sparring I’ve had with Skeete though, that was an experience in itself and someone like him shows what you can strive towards – he’s a really good guy and very humble in it.
“I enjoy boxing though and that kind of sparring helps.
“The rest of this year I’d like to stay busy and hopefully get another three or four contests in. I’m raring to go and will fight every month if we get that phone call – I’m ready and willing to go straight away.”
Carley would like to thank his sponsors Expert Skips, Grafting Gardens and Metro Waste for helping him start his journey into the pro ranks.
